Sur Fond Blanc

Paul Duncombe

Research & Creation

Mentored by Avatar and l’Œil de Poisson, as part of the Pépinières européennes residencies at Coopérative Méduse, French artist Paul Duncombe will be in Quebec City from January 12 to April 9, 2015, to create a new work: Sur Fond Blanc.

“A homemade probe is dropped off in the middle of the Saint-Jean Lake, a 407 square mile frozen body of water in the province of Quebec. Carried by foot from the shores under polar conditions, the machine is left for 24 hours at the heart of the white desert. The body of the device supports a highly sensitive microphone with a series of meteorological sensors. In addition to the audio caption, measures are taken: pressure, temperature, humidity, wind, light and magnetic field. Alone in close proximity with to the elements, the ephemeral station records fragments of the eternal variations of the atmosphere.”

This artist residency is made possible thanks to the support of the CALQ, the Pépinières européennes pour jeunes artistes, the Entente de développement culturel MCC/Ville de Québec, Coopérative Méduse, Avatar, L’Oeil de Poisson and the Consulat Général de France à Québec.
