Mandate

Avatar is an artist center devoted to research, creation and dissemination of audio and electronic art. Founded in 1993, Avatar offers professional and emerging artists the equipment and skills necessary to support their ideas. With activities designed to favor exchange and sharing, Avatar stimulates collaboration between creators and disciplines through a large local and international network. Avatar organizes artists residencies, supports creation and dissemination projects, proposes exchanges with similar organisations and establishes a network of influence between the artists and the public. Avatar's program is organized around a theme chosen by the artistic direction's committee and approved by the board of directors. It covers over a year of research and creation and allows, through the projects interactions, a discourse on audio and electronic art to emerge.

Avatar's activities evolve around 3 objectives:

  • Encouraging creators in audio and electronic art to get together;
  • Offering artists the equipment and abilities they require to pursue their art practice;
  • Disseminating the works of Québec artists on a national and international network.

Avatar is also a professional equipment, 4 research and creation spaces and the expertise of a technical team, for a complete approach of audio, image and interactive systems. Avatar is also a publisher of audio and electronic pieces, as well as critical and documentary projects, on multiple medias (CD, DVD, books, etc.) and offers a free access to some of these pieces.

Acknowledgments: Avatar thanks its members, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, and the city of Québec.
